Computing Skills Tutor (Academic Community of Excellence Team)

About our role: Due to planned growth within our HE Business School, we are seeking to enhance our faculty with experienced Computing Tutors within our Academic Community of Excellence Team (ACE) for our undergraduate and potentially post-graduate students.

Your focus:  

Plan, prepare, teach/deliver computing skills support sessions for small groups and on a one-to-one basis to guide student’s learning on a range of programmes and related computing areas

Develop and deliver computing-related workshops

Guide students in computer labs to demonstrate the working of software programmes

Support students in running computer network simulators

Support students in using MS Office tools, such as word, ppt, excel, etc.

Support students with problem-solving/algorithm design

Create and develop learner (self-study) materials to enhance student understanding and success

Provide pastoral care and support (as a Personal Tutor)

Provide and deliver a student-centred approach

Provide guidance, support and tutorship for student groups and individuals as appropriate.

Maintain personal and professional development in line with agreed appraisal and development programme in order to enhance personal knowledge and contribution to relevant activities. 

Bring your experience:

MSc Computer Science or related degree in computing and software engineering

  • Practical Knowledge of programming languages (at least two or more of the following programming languages: Java, C++, Visual Basic, HTML5, CSS, Java script, PHP, SQL, Mobile Development using Android studio);
  • Knowledge of computer networks and network security (use of simulators, for example, GNS3, Wireshark, Packet tracer);
  • Knowledge of algorithm design and pseudo code;
  • Lab-demonstrator experience would be preferred
  • HEA status or demonstrate teaching experience with a commitment to achieving the required Professional Standards for teaching.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work under pressure and excellent interpersonal and communication skills

More about the Team you will be working with:  The ACE team supports learners with their academic writing, presentation and study skills.  With the new team member on board who specialises in computing, the team aims to expand and provide computing skills support. The current team are TEFL Q professionals who, under the guidance of Head of ACE, work closely with both academic and support teams, establishing the most effective ways of providing student support mechanisms. The ACE team works with learners across four current locations (London Rosebery Avenue and Middlesex Street, Birmingham and Manchester) and four current university partners (Roehampton, Ulster, Northumbria and Middlesex).

Our Company: At QAHE you will be surrounded by staff who love teaching and prioritise the student experience. We specialise in teaching as our main focus and ensuring a good experience for the learner is the number one priority for the team.

Perhaps the most significant difference visible on campus is that traditional universities tend to be quite empty (of academic staff) as lecturers spend much less time in the office. There is a friendly and supportive atmosphere here at QAHE with typically far more team-working, promoted in part by more regular staff attendance on campus and in the staff offices.

Some potential candidates will find this, and the emphasis on teaching rather than research, very attractive. Academic staff in traditional universities of all ranks are placed under significant demand for research outputs and so have to balance a teaching load and the associated administration with their research obligations. To some this feels like an impossible burden (particularly when expectations around consultancy are added).

The management hierarchy at QAHE (year heads, deputy course managers and so on) creates opportunities for course management and career progression at QAHE and these types of responsibilities are genuinely devolved in a way that is typically uncommon in other HEIs.

Salary range: £30-35k + Benefits
